For safety and for defence people in the Middle Ages formed small communities around a central lord or master. Most people lived on a Manor which consisted of the castle, the church, the village and the surrounding farm land. These manors were isolated with occasional visits from pedlars pilgrims on their way to the crusades, or soldiers from other fiefdoms. I would suggest to try and stay in these “manors” because it is rarely attacked and has been provided with the sources you will need for example food, water, shelter and a church with also many small things scattered around the little village.
